About the volunteering opportunity
Laughing and reading together, giving a child undivided attention, accompanying them and strengthening their self-esteem - for the non-profit organization KinderHelden we are looking for volunteer mentors who want to support Munich primary school children with difficult starting conditions on their way to secondary school. We provide children with reading and leisure time mentors who accompany and individually support them for at least one year.
Your Tasks
The adults support the children in school, do homework together and learn together. In addition, they undertake meaningful leisure activities and explore their district. They support the children in their language skills, reading and arithmetic or homework and also in very practical everyday education. For this purpose, the first four meetings are held on the school's premises, after which other public spaces can also be visited. The times can be arranged flexibly with the child.
Most of these meetings take place in person and 1:1 (depending on current events in times of Corona, this is alternatively also possible digitally) but group activities (e.g. museum visit) are also planned again in the long term.
What's needed
You don't need to have any previous educational experience, because you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. In addition, you will receive individually tailored learning materials and tips for child-friendly activities. During the entire year, you will be accompanied and trained by full-time employees who will be available to you as contact persons.
Time required
Ideally, you are free about 1x per week in an afternoon about 2 hours to meet with a child and to tutor it individually. The times can be arranged flexibly with the child.
Before the start of the commitment, we get to know you in a personal interview (duration about 45 minutes) via video call. This is followed by the introductory workshop for our volunteers, which lasts about 3 hours. This takes place as a webinar.
Important notice
It must be presented before the first personal meeting with the child an extended certificate of good conduct without entry. This is available free of charge with our application for volunteers.
The commitment offer takes place either in Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Westkreuz, Riem, Hasenbergl or in Sendling-Westpark.
