About the volunteering opportunity

Give your time and you'll get a lot in return!

Our outpatient hospice service offers psychosocial counseling and support for seriously ill and dying people and their relatives. As a volunteer, you accompany people on their final journey through life. The content of the support is based on the individual wishes and needs of the person being supported. To prepare you for this important social task, you will take part in an empowerment course. The content of the course includes, for example, communication models, stages of dying, stages of grief, specialist lectures, group dynamic exercises, practical assignments and much more. Participation in the course is free of charge.

Your Tasks

You accompany people in the last phase of their lives. The content of the accompaniment is always tailored to the individual wishes and needs of the person being accompanied. As an outsider, you can become an important discussion partner and, above all, a listener for the person being accompanied. This is because you are not emotionally involved in the same way as relatives. The seriously ill/dying person can talk to you about things that are on their mind: the search for meaning after life, what happens after death, what last things still need to be sorted out, what went well in life, where there were stumbling blocks in life, which relationships were successful, what conflicts there were in relationships, which conflicts can still be resolved, what remains unresolved. There are many topics that can be discussed. Sometimes a support session is also very quiet, namely when the other person can no longer speak. Here we are simply there, holding their hand, being quiet or reading aloud. And there is often laughter during the accompaniment when stories from the past are told and memories are relived. This voluntary work is very rewarding and gives you a lot in return.
