What is this commitment about?
In order not to let the horror of the persecution of the Jews and murder during National Socialism be forgotten, the artist Günter Demnig created the initiative of so-called Stolpersteine in 1992.
These are handmade brass stones inscribed with names, which were embedded in sidewalks at the places where Jewish people lived at the time of National Socialism and were deported from here. This is intended to make the fate of these people directly tangible and to give passengers an understanding of the fact that these horrors happened right on our doorstep.
What are 5-Minute Commitments?
With our 5-Minute Commitments, we want to inspire you to easily integrate volunteering into your everyday life. They are independent of non-profit organizations and allow you to individually get involved for people and nature in your neighborhood.
By cleaning Stolpersteine you help to keep those memories alive and at the same time set a sign against anti-Semitism and hostility towards Jews. On November 9th, every year, in memory of the Day of the Reichspogromnacht 1938, there is a nationwide call to clean the Stolpersteine in your own neighborhood. But of course you can also do this independently of this fixed date.
All you need to clean the Stolpersteine is a metal or brass cleaning agent, a kitchen sponge and a little water. Then all you have to do is keep your eyes open for Stolpersteine in your neighborhood and you can get started right away.
No special previous knowledge is necessary.
Cleaning a Stolperstein takes only a few minutes.
This project is location independent.
We are a social enterprise from Berlin with a big dream: We want a world in which everyone contributes to a better and more sustainable future according to their possibilities and regardless of time budget, language or previous knowledge. For this purpose, we gather on vostel.de numerous engagement offers from non-profit organizations that are looking for volunteers. By doing this, we show concrete possibilities for action in order to become socially active and would like to motivate above all the younger generations to get involved for a better world.More about the organisation
