About the volunteering opportunity
Our association implements the Germany-wide mentoring program "Balu und Du" (Balzu and You) in Braunschweig and also in Wolfenbüttel. The idea is that young people between the ages of 17 and about 30 become mentors ("Balu"), for a primary school child ("Mogli") for at least one year and meet up with them once a week in order to do fun activities together.
Your Tasks
Balu (mentor) and Mogli (child) meet at least once a week for one to three hours. Balu plans and arranges the meetings individually with Mogli. Depending on the wishes of each team, possible activities include visits to swimming pools, museums, playgrounds, forests, farms and sights in the region. But also playing games, handicrafts and cooking together is possible.
The seminars, which take place additionally, help the Balu to deal with different topics and problems. In addition, among other things, ideas for possible activities as well as joint excursions are collected and planned together.
What's needed
There are no specific requirements we expect you to fulfill since we intentionally do not have a pedagogical focus. But the goal is for you to rather be a friend than a teacher. Your CV will be checked, there will be a previous interview and an extended certificate of good conduct is required. As a Balu you should be 17 to about 30 years old.
Time required
The mentoring program consists of three time factors:
- Meeting with Mogli (elementary school child): 1-3 hours per week (1 meeting per week)
- Diary entry after each meeting: 10-15 minutes per meeting
- Accompanying seminar: 90 minutes, 1 meeting per week
The mentoring takes place for one year.
