About the volunteering opportunity

The state and civil society work hand in hand in the NesT reception program. This cooperation enables particularly vulnerable refugees to enter Germany safely and legally. The most important pillar is the personal care and financial support provided by volunteers who form a mentoring group. They provide accommodation in advance and support the refugees with their integration. The mentoring groups are supported by the Civil Society Contact Point (ZKS), which assists the mentoring groups with all questions - including those relating to the financing of housing.

Your Tasks

NesT is an innovative state-society program that aims to enable committed individuals to play an active role in welcoming refugees who are in particular need of protection. The reception program is aimed at anyone who is willing to take on a key role as a mentor in helping refugees to arrive and settle in.

To this end, four volunteers join together to form a mentoring group, organize suitable accommodation together, secure the financing of the rent for one year and provide support with visits to the authorities, establishing contacts with schools, training and further education as well as organizing encounters with the local community. They are trained and supported by the Civil Society Contact Point (ZKS) with representatives from the German Caritas Association, the German Red Cross and the Protestant Church of Westphalia.

At NesT, help comes in many forms and can also be provided as part of a company's corporate social responsibility. Donations can be made or the project can be promoted.

What's needed

Volunteers must be native German speakers.
Experience in the field of refugee work is not a prerequisite. Anyone can get involved with NesT, as competent support is provided by the Civil Society Contact Point (ZKS).

NesT - Neustart im Team

The humanitarian admission program NesT - Neustart im Team gives particularly vulnerable refugees in Germany the chance of a life in safety and dignity. Refugees whose life, freedom, safety, health and rights are also at risk in their first country of refuge are nominated for the program by the UNHCR. The German authorities organize the selection and admission.
