Building language bridges: Exchange and support for refugees in the language café (german)

We always look forward to Monday and Thursday afternoons at the Kiezspinne when the language café takes place. Many friends, acquaintances, new faces and people with refugee background visit us regularly. It's a lot of fun to chat and exchange ideas, and the informal atmosphere creates a wonderful feeling. On average, up to 20 people with different needs and from different countries of origin come to us. As a result, we learn a lot about each other, think outside the box, get to know new cultures, make friends and have even formed partnerships. We enjoy the two hours together, often sit outside in good weather in summer and organize buffets to which everyone can bring something homemade. We are always on the lookout for volunteers who would like to support us in this great project.

We focus on the needs of the participants, usually having simple conversations about everyday matters or offering help with homework and tasks from the integration courses.

It is a great opportunity to come into contact with refugees of all ages and genders and to break down barriers, prejudices and fears. Many volunteers report that they have a good feeling after the language café and feel more at ease. It is an enriching experience to help people with their integration.
