Volunteering without German skills | Here’s how you can get involved

According to Statista, in 2022, around 2.7 million immigrants lived in Germany – including expats (short for expatriates) as well as refugees from all over the world. The reasons that motivate people to emigrate are very individual with lately many being forced to leave their home country due to conficts.

Many of the Newcomers wish to become actively involved in their new community, e.g. through volunteering in a non-profit organisation, a social project in their neighbourhood or even remotely from home. However, this aspiration is often limited by language barriers since without German skills – and German is obviously a tough one to learn – it is hard to find existing volunteering activites and get in contact with a social organisation.

No (or only basic) German skills needed

At vostel.de our goal is to enable everyone to get involved in volunteering without limitation and independet of their German skill level. Therefore we describe all projects on our platform in German as well as in English and indicate which language skills are required for each project.

In fact, there are also many volunteering activities that you can support without any German language skills at all. In this blog post, we will introduce you to ways to get involved without or only little German skills.

Get involved on-site

On vostel.de you will find a great variety of local volunteering projects that you can get involved in. Whether it’s working a shift serving food at a homeless charity, helping to sort clothing donations, getting involved in nature conservation, looking after the children of refugee families, helping to organise clothes swap parties or supporting organisations with your design, music or photography skills – there are countless opportunities to get involved in your neighbourhood without (or only basic) German skills.

You can’t find a suitable on-site project for you? Then take a look at our remote and digital projects without (or only baisc) Germann skills. They range from supporting non-profits with their social media work to sharing your IT knowledge with others or writing articles for a constructive online News Portal. Take a look around and find a suitable commitment to do from your home.

different volunteering possibilities shown side by side: a woman plogging, birds at a feeder, a book exchange shelf ans someone sorting out their closet.

Actually, you don’t have enough time for volunteering at an organisation in Berlin at the moment? Then maybe our 5-Minute-Commitments are the right thing for you. They are independent of non-profit organisations and allow you to get involved individually and according to your own schedule.

From plogging (collecting litter while jogging), to distributing seed bombs for a greener city, to small help services for neighbours, you can already do something good for the people and nature in your neighbourhood with small everyday activities.

Your team from vostel.de wishes you a lot of fun volunteering!
