Helping out in the Ohlauer Straße emergency shelter for homeless people

At the Ohlauer Straße emergency shelter, Johanniter offers up to 76 homeless people with up to 10 dogs a place to stay, a meal, and washing facilities every day of the week. We rely on volunteer support to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. By working with us, you help people who are in great need in a very concrete way - and you learn a lot about Berlin, about yourself and about being human.

New: We urgently need help in our night shifts, where you and a Johanniter staff member will make sure that the night's rest goes well and that breakfast and the check-out of the guests go smoothly in the morning. Of course, there are always security staff on site during our working hours.

Your Tasks

There are many tasks that arise from running the accommodation, which you can take over according to your skills and desire:

• the admission and bed allocation for organisational talents and foreign language speakers
• the preparation and serving of meals
• support and information for those who are particularly willing to help
• the clothing store for the circumspect and orderly
• the different services for universally gifted people

What's needed

All areas of application except for kitchen service are free of prerequisites and suitable for any person. For food preparation and serving, the possession of the "red card" (infection protection instruction for food personnel) is mandatory - this can be applied for and acquired at the Berlin Health Office Wilmersdorf. At least basic knowledge of the German language is required. It is great if you also know other relevant languages: English, Arabic, Polish, Russian, Bulgarian, etc.

What to bring

All relevant work equipment is provided. It would make sense to wear comfortable and warm clothes, which can be get dirty.

Due to the current situation, the emergency overnight stay Ohlauer Straße has taken special hygienic measures and needs more urgently than ever voluntary support! Please make this decision responsibly and inform yourself about the hygiene measures on site to protect yourself and your fellow men!

Voluntary commitment has a long tradition at Johanniter. We welcome anyone who wants to contribute to the common good on a voluntary basis. There is no age limit, as long as the volunteers can deal with the tasks they want to do.
