About the volunteering opportunity
We’re looking for people who are interested in a topic that’s both responsible and exciting: guardianship.
Become a volunteer guardian for a child or teenager! It’s amazing how much you learn about yourself and how caring for a young person can help you grow as a person.
For a variety of reasons, the parents of these young people are unable to exercise their parental rights. As a volunteer guardian, you ensure that this does not result in fewer opportunities for your ward.
Your goal is to create a positive living situation for the young person so that they can successfully start their own independent life. In doing so, you’ll maintain regular contact with the young person and build a personal bond that lasts until they reach the age of majority—and even beyond.
Please help us give these young people the opportunities they deserve.

As a volunteer guardian, you will be responsible for ensuring appropriate housing, handling school-related matters, ensuring access to medical care, managing financial affairs, and corresponding with government agencies and institutions.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
- A passion for continuous, responsible, and long-term commitment
- An appreciative, non-judgmental attitude toward children and adolescents
- Sensitivity to the cultural and religious backgrounds of young people
- Empathy and strong communication skills
- Availability and a strong sense of responsibility
- Willingness to cooperate with the Youth Welfare Office and other institutions
- Openness and the ability to accept criticism
Time required
Regularly
Discussed individually
On weekdays, on weekends, during the day
The time frame for guardianship can vary greatly depending on the situation. If there is a specific issue, such as enrolling in a new school or moving, it may take a significant amount of time. In other weeks, this is sometimes offset.
Important: We never leave anyone on their own; as a specialized counseling service, we are always there to support volunteer guardians as a “backup” and to offer advice and assistance.

Important notice
We take great care in selecting wards and also make every effort to take your wishes into account as much as possible. Of course, there is an extensive getting-to-know-you phase before a guardianship is established.

SkF Essen-Mitte e.V. - Vormundschaftsteam
Guardianship is established when parents are unable or prohibited from exercising custody.
The goal of the SkF guardianship team is to create a positive living situation for the young people involved, so that they can successfully start their own independent lives.
In doing so, contact with the children and adolescents should not be neglected, and a personal bond should develop that lasts until they reach the age of majority. In the case of volunteer guardianships, this bond often continues long after their 18th birthday.
