About the volunteering opportunity

Bilingual (multilingual) reading mentors are sought for children and young people (8 to 16 years of age) with a migration background who are growing up multilingually. Children and adolescents often speak their language of origin in their families, while German is spoken at school. In school, besides speaking, the learning of rules and grammar of the German language is added. In most cases, the latter is not necessary for the language of origin: thus, it is not possible to acquire sufficient reading competence in the language of origin, or in many cases, unfortunately, less reading competence in German. If these reading skills are not acquired, children and young people's chances of social and societal participation decrease.

Your Tasks

In order to build up a trusting relationship between child and mentor, we are looking for bilingual reading mentors with a good knowledge of both languages. As a reading mentor, you will support the children and young people in reading and help them to enjoy learning the language.

What's needed

Volunteers must be native German speakers.

Please note that in order to participate in this project you should attend an introductory seminar.
