About the volunteering opportunity
Bilingual (multilingual) reading mentors are needed for children and young people (8 to 16 years of age) with a migration background who are growing up multilingually. Children and adolescents often speak their language of origin in their families, while German is spoken at school. In school, besides speaking, the learning of rules and grammar of the German language is added. In most cases, this is omitted with the language of origin: thus, it is not possible to acquire sufficient reading competence in the language of origin, or in many cases, unfortunately, it also means less reading competence in German. When these reading skills are not acquired, children and young people's chances of social and societal participation decrease.
Your Tasks
We are looking for bilingual reading mentors with a good knowledge of both languages to build a trusting relationship between child and mentor. As a reading mentor, you will support children and young people in reading and help them to enjoy learning the language.
