About the volunteering opportunity

The child and youth helpline (Nummer gegen Kummer) is a confidential and anonymous contact, discussion and advice service for children and young people of all ages. It can be reached nationwide under a standardized and free telephone number from Monday to Saturday from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Your Tasks

To work on the phone, you should have the willingness and the time requirements
  • over a period of at least two years
  • regularly work several hours per month and
  • take part once a month in the coordination and professional support of the children's and youth helpline (Wednesday from 5.00 - 6.30 pm).
Before taking up voluntary work, a topic-specific training course of at least 60 hours takes place. One focus is on teaching communication and counseling skills for the special situation (purely telephone counseling, no possibility of renewed contact, dealing with difficult telephone calls, etc.). In addition to imparting knowledge on various topics that occur on the telephone, practical exercises play an important role. The training course is followed by at least 10 hours of work shadowing.
