About the volunteering opportunity

The parent telephone of Nummer gegen Kummer e.V. and the Leipziger Kinderschutzbund is an anonymous, direct and free telephone conversation and advice service for parents, family members and educators seeking advice.

Your Tasks

Those interested in volunteering at the parent hotline complete a training course to become a telephone counsellor. Afterwards, they provide advice on the phone themselves. The volunteers focus on listening, competent conversation management and relationship building during the telephone contact. The challenge consists in spontaneously empathizing with the situation described, in giving attention and is supported by an appreciative attitude towards the callers.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.

For the voluntary work at the parents' telephone we are looking for interested people who are willing to undergo further training and can assure their commitment regularly and over a longer period of time. Since a wide variety of people call the phone, it is important to be open to other life worlds.

You need to take part in an obligatory training to become a phone counsellor. This takes approx. 70-90 hours and takes place on approx. 12 evening dates during the week (17:00 - 20:00) as well as 4-5 Saturdays (9:00 - 16:00).

The volunteer work itself takes about 8 hours per month. Once a week, volunteers provide counselling in 2-hour shifts during the counselling hours (Mon-Fri from 9-11 a.m. and Tues + Thurs from 5-7 p.m.).
