Trust in democracy is dwindling

In Germany, most people are fundamentally committed to democracy. However, there is a growing gap between this commitment and satisfaction with its implementation. At the same time, parties such as the AfD with anti-democratic positions are gaining popularity and attacks on journalists and civil society organizations are on the rise. These developments are also clearly reflected in current studies and reports:

  • 79% of the population describe themselves as convinced democrats (up 6 percentage points on 2021) (FES Mitte Study 2025)

  • 80% see the global rise in populism as a significant threat, an increase of 11 percentage points compared to the previous year (Körber Stiftung 2025)

Human rights under pressure

In its latest report (2024/25), the German Institute for Human Rights states that particularly vulnerable groups in Germany continue to be inadequately protected. These include people in the asylum process, children, women affected by gender-based violence and victims of human trafficking. The situation is further exacerbated worldwide by the rise of authoritarian forces and the erosion of multilateral structures.

There are also worrying developments in Germany:

  • 5,164 antisemitic crimes were registered in 2023, an increase of 96 percent compared to the previous year (HRW World Report 2025)
  • The Federal Ministry of the Interior counted 15,087 xenophobic crimes in 2023, an increase of 50 percent compared to 2022 and a new high. Around 77% of these were politically motivated by the right (Mediendienst Integration)
Civil society as a protective shield

Despite these developments, there is reason for optimism: an active civil society acts as an important counterweight. According to the Federal Foreign Office, civic engagement and human rights are mutually dependent: without committed people, there is a lack of voices that draw attention to grievances and make marginalized groups heard. 2024 findings by the German Foundation for Civic Engagement and Volunteering are particularly revealing: committed people are significantly less likely to hold right-wing extremist and misanthropic attitudes than those who are not committed. Volunteering therefore not only has an outward effect, it also strengthens the democratic attitude of the people who do it.

You don’t need any prior knowledge to stand up for democracy

You don’t have to be an expert to volunteer in the field of democracy and human rights. Many organizations impart knowledge directly through volunteering. They explain the background to political contexts, human rights issues or specific projects and show you how you can get involved effectively. The decisive factor is a willingness to learn, take on responsibility and develop new perspectives on social challenges.

Together, we are stronger

Strengthening democracy and human rights is not an individual task. Many initiatives thrive on people coming together, sharing experiences and taking action together. If you know other committed people, you can react better to challenges and remain capable of acting even in difficult moments. Many organizations offer regular exchange rounds or networking formats for this purpose.

Enter the dialogue with confidence

In your commitment to democracy and human rights, you will meet people with very different perspectives. It is important to be open and respectful, even if you encounter opinions that you do not share. Instead of relying on confrontation, many initiatives work with dialog-oriented formats that focus on mutual understanding. The key is to present your own position in such a way that you remain open to dialog.

Stamina & Resilience

Volunteering for democracy and human rights is fulfilling, but does not always produce visible results immediately. Social change takes time, and issues such as discrimination or political violence can be emotionally draining. Many organizations therefore offer exchange meetings or permanent contact persons. It is important to see success even in small moments: Every conversation, every event and every sponsorship helps to strengthen democratic values.

5. FAQ – Frequently asked questions about volunteering for democracy & human rights

How much time should I set aside?

It depends on the project. There are one-off commitments that only last a few hours, such as support at an event or a 5-minute digital volunteering. Regular activities such as sponsorships or educational programs require more continuity. You decide for yourself how much time you want to invest.

Can I also get involved online or from home?

Yes, many projects in the area of democracy and human rights are location-independent. These include working on podcasts or newsletters, maintaining social media channels, supporting research or digital sponsorships. On vostel.de you can filter specifically for location-independent volunteering.

What difference can I really make as an individual?

More than you might think. Volunteers are an essential part of what makes civil society organizations effective. At the same time, research shows that people who get involved are demonstrably more likely to represent democratic values and pass these on to those around them. Involvement therefore has an effect both internally and externally.

How do I deal with opposition or hostility?

Anyone who publicly campaigns for democracy and human rights may occasionally encounter opposition or hostility. Many organizations prepare volunteers specifically for this, for example with argumentation training or clear recommendations for action in difficult situations. The important thing is that you don’t have to deal with this alone. Discuss incidents openly with your organization and make use of the support services that many organizations offer. Strengthening each other and sharing experiences is part of the volunteering in this area.

Is this commitment emotionally draining?

This can be the case, especially when it comes to issues such as discrimination, flight or political violence. Many organizations therefore offer discussion groups, supervision or permanent contact persons. It is important to know your own limits and to speak up if something becomes too much.

How do I find an organization that’s right for me?

On vostel.de, you can filter by topic, regularity, location and German language skills and search specifically for a volunteering opportunity that suits your life situation. Many organizations also offer an initial introductory meeting before you commit yourself.
