About the volunteering opportunity

Laughing and reading together, giving a child undivided attention, accompanying it and strengthening its self-esteem - for the non-profit organisation KinderHelden we are looking for volunteer mentors who want to support primary school children in Hamburg with difficult starting conditions on their way to secondary school. Through the "LeseTandem+" project, the children receive a reading and leisure time mentor who accompanies them for a year and specifically promotes their reading skills.

Your Tasks

Reading without frustration!

The basic principle of the "sound reading method", which supports the LeseTandems+ during the first three months, works quite simply: follow the lines with your finger, actively improve errors and praise a lot. A simple principle with great effect. The better the child reads, the more you can withdraw as a mentor. After that, the Reading Olympics can start. This is about independent frequent reading. The reward is a certificate and a prize! But the greatest reward for every child is to be able to open up new worlds by reading and to talk about it with their mentor.

In addition to reading, the program includes further school support and meaningful leisure activities. Registrations are possible at any time!

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
You do not need to have any previous pedagogical experience, because in a preparatory workshop you will be prepared for your new role. You will also receive individually tailored learning materials and tips for activities suitable for children. Throughout the year, you will be accompanied and trained by full-time staff who will be available to you as contact persons.

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 2 hours per week.
On weekdays, on weekends, during the day
