About the volunteering opportunity

Is there anything better than having a great friend at your side who supports you and makes you strong? Primary school children with difficult starting conditions in particular can benefit from this. And that's exactly why KinderHelden exists: a non-profit and donation-funded organization that provides children with volunteer mentors. They give them time and attention once a week for around two hours for at least one school year - to read and learn, play and laugh.

Your Tasks

You support your mentee in language skills, reading and arithmetic or with homework, but also in practical everyday education. In addition to academic support, meaningful leisure activities are also on the program for you.

The first four meetings are planned at school to get to know each other and build trust, after which the meetings can also take place outside of school in public spaces or virtually on the KinderHelden Campus, our digital learning platform.

The 1:1 meetings are supplemented by group activities, such as visits to museums or zoos together with other KinderHelden tandems. There are also regular mentoring get-togethers for our volunteers.

Our volunteers have access to workshops and webinars via the campus in order to provide the children with the best possible and targeted support.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
You don't need any previous teaching experience, as you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. We will also provide you with individually tailored learning materials and tips for child-friendly activities. Throughout the year, you will receive pedagogical support and training from full-time employees who will be on hand to help you during your time as a volunteer.

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 2 hours per week.
On weekdays, on weekends, during the day
Ideally, you should have around 2 hours once a week in the afternoon to meet with a child and support and strengthen them individually.

Before the start of the commitment, we will get to know you in a personal meeting (lasting approx. 45 minutes) via video call. This is followed by the introductory workshop as a self-study program, followed by a webinar.
