About the volunteering opportunity

We are looking for committed young people between the ages of 16 and 26 who live in Germany and are enthusiastic about intercultural exchange, learning together and practical project work. Our international workcamps offer the opportunity to work together with participants from different countries, making new friends and developing intercultural skills.
At the workcamps, participants work together on various charitable projects that make a positive contribution to society. The projects can cover areas such as environmental protection, renovation of historical buildings, social work or intercultural exchange. The workcamps last 2 to 4 weeks depending on the project.

All workcamps for the 2024 season can be found here.

Your Tasks

The tasks vary depending on the project (e.g. childcare, planting trees, renovation work, etc.). Participants generally work around 5 hours on weekdays and have the opportunity to explore the surrounding area at weekends.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, basic German skills are required.
Please note the announcement of the respective camp. Some work camps have additional costs, the so-called extra fees. Whether this is the case is stated in the respective description. Accommodation, meals and a small leisure program during the work camp are free of charge. You are responsible for organizing and paying for your own travel to the work camp.

We want to enable as many young people as possible to take part in a workcamp. If you are unable to cover all the costs yourself, we will be happy to support you proportionally with money from our solidarity pot. Please make a specific request, when you register for the camp.

Important notice

Everything we do is based on eight working principles. They form the basis both for our educational work and for our cooperation within the association.
The ijgd principles:
  • Ecological learning: Promoting awareness of environmental issues and sustainable lifestyles, through discussion and practical experience. Emphasizing personal responsibility for people and nature
  • Voluntariness: Commitment is based on voluntariness and self-motivation, not on obligation. It not only serves society, but also enables personal growth and learning without pressure to perform.
  • Self-organization: Creating freedom for independent design and assumption of responsibility. Consideration and inclusion of all interests and wishes.
  • Social learning: Focus on communal interaction, recognition of diversity and promotion of social and emotional skills through interaction and change of perspective.
  • Intercultural learning: Dealing with cultural diversity and prejudices, promoting openness, understanding and appreciation of diversity.
  • Gender equality and sexual diversity: Raising awareness of gender and sexual diversity, promoting equal rights, self-determination and mutual acceptance.
  • Anti-racism, anti-discrimination: Reflecting on own prejudices and social power relations, working against all forms of discrimination.
  • Political education: Promotion of an active democracy through critical thinking, discussions about social structures and support for political decision-making in the context of volunteer work.
