About the volunteering opportunity
What is the project about?
Reading is THE key skill. Unfortunately, 40% of primary school children cannot read fluently enough and do not understand what they read correctly. These children need our individual support! KinderHelden would like to help them with a tried and tested and simple reading method. We are currently looking for volunteer reading mentors for 15 primary school children at the Ackermann School and the Günderrode School in Gallus.
Your Tasks
Reading pleasure instead of frustration!
The basic principle of reading training is very simple: trace the lines with your finger, actively correct mistakes and give lots of praise. A simple principle with a big effect. The better the child reads, the more you can take a step back as a mentor. The Reading Olympics can then begin. This is all about independent reading. The reward is a certificate and a prize! However, the greatest reward for every child is to be able to open up new worlds through reading and to talk about it with their mentors.
The first four meetings are planned at school to get to know each other and build trust, after which the meetings can also take place outside of school in public spaces (e.g. in libraries) or virtually on the KinderHelden Campus, our digital learning platform.
The 1:1 meetings are supplemented by group activities, such as visits to museums or zoos together with other tandems. There are also regular mentor get-togethers for our volunteers.
What's needed
For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
You don't need to have any previous pedagogical experience, because you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. In addition, you will receive individually tailored learning materials and tips for child-friendly activities. During the entire year, you will be accompanied and trained by full-time employees who will be available to you as contact persons
Time required
Ideal is if you have about 1x per week on an afternoon about 2 hours to meet with a child and to promote and strengthen it individually.
Before the commitment begins, we get to know you in a personal interview (duration about 45 minutes) via video call. This is followed by the introductory workshop as a self-study program, followed by a webinar.
