About the volunteering opportunity

Laughing and reading together, giving a child undivided attention, accompanying them and strengthening their self-esteem - for the non-profit organization KinderHelden, we are looking for volunteer mentors who want to support Frankfurt primary school children with difficult starting conditions on their way to secondary school. Through the "LeseTandem+" project, the children receive a reading and leisure mentor who accompanies them for a year and specifically promotes their reading skills.

Your Tasks

Fun Reading instead of frustration!

The basic principle of the "phonetic reading method", which supports the "LeseTandems+" in the first three months, works quite simply: trace the lines with your finger, actively improve mistakes and praise a lot. A simple principle with great effect. The better the child reads, the more the mentor can take a step back. After that, the Reading Olympics can start. The aim here is to encourage independent reading. The reward is a certificate and a prize! The greatest reward for each child, however, is to be able to open up new worlds while reading and to talk about them with their mentors.

For getting to know each other and building trust, the first four meetings are planned at school, after which the meetings can also take place outside of school in public spaces (e.g., in libraries), outside the school or virtually on the KinderHelden Campus, our digital learning platform.

The 1:1 meetings are supplemented by group activities, such as visits to museums or zoos together with other tandems. In addition, regular mentor*in regular meetings are held for our volunteers.

Through the campus, our volunteers have access to workshops and webinars in order to be able to support the children in the best possible and targeted manner.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.
You don't need to have any previous pedagogical experience, because you will be prepared for your new role in a preparatory workshop. In addition, you will receive individually tailored learning materials and tips for child-friendly activities. During the entire year, you will be accompanied and trained by full-time employees who will be available to you as contact persons

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 2 hours per week.
On weekdays, on weekends, during the day
Ideal is if you have about 1x per week on an afternoon about 2 hours to meet with a child and to promote and strengthen it individually.

Before the commitment begins, we get to know you in a personal interview (duration about 45 minutes) via video call. This is followed by the introductory workshop as a self-study program, followed by a webinar.
