About the volunteering opportunity

We arrange reading aloud mentors at Essen kindergartens and elementary schools. You want to awaken the interest in books with the children by regular reading aloud? Join us!

Your Tasks

We place the reading mentors at a fixed institution. There, they read to a group of children on specific dates and also engage in conversation with the children. In a daycare center, reading is preferably from picture books; in elementary school, the topic is read-aloud books and children's books. A reading session also always involves communication with the children, for example, about what is experienced in the story or about what perhaps should have been different. The reading mentors bring time for the reading hour in the facility, but also have time for the selection of literature and for the preparation of the texts.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, advanced German skills are required.

Reading makes life richer, reading is fun, reading creates knowledge, reading stimulates the imagination, reading gives courage. If you also see it that way and enjoy working with children, you will fit in well with us.

Read-aloud books are available at the facility or you can choose your favorite books at the public library. In return, you will receive a free children's book loan card.

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 1 hour per week.
On weekdays, during the day

Once a week, for about one hour, there will be a reading session. The exact time is agreed individually.

Important notice

Reading aloud should take place regularly. The children really look forward to their weekly reading session. Vacation in between is of course also possible. In addition, a certificate of good conduct is required. We support you with the application.

Where?

Essener Lesebündnis e. V.

Without books, life would be boring - this is the motto under which the Essen Reading Alliance has been working since its founding in 2005 to give children and young people a love of books and the joy of reading. The voluntary reading mentors of the non-profit organisation are regular guests at daycare centers and elementary schools in Essen.
