About the volunteering opportunity
As a volunteer language mediator at TranslAid, you will support refugees in various counseling sessions and appointments. Language mediators are of great importance for all people who are new to Germany and do not yet speak much German. They create the prerequisite for the refugees to understand the entire conversation and to be able to make self-determined decisions on the basis of it.
Your Tasks
As a language mediator, you will interpret for refugees at various counseling sessions and appointments between German and their native language. We arrange assignments in these areas, among others:
- Individual counseling sessions
- Goings to authorities
- Doctors' appointments
- Written, non-sworn translations
We are currently looking for language mediators for Dari, Farsi, Arabic, Ukrainian and Russian, among others.
What's needed
These are the qualities you should have as a language mediator:
- Empathy
- Open-mindedness towards others and new things
- Confidentiality
- Reliability
Time required
You can flexibly determine how many assignments you would like to take on. On average, an assignment lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Participation in an introductory event is a prerequisite
