Get an organ donor card or get an organ donor tattoo

What is this commitment about? 

In Germany, about 8,500 people are on the waiting list for an organ donation, at the same time the number of donated organs is declining and was just 869 donations in 2022. While about 84% of Germans are rather positive about organ donation, only about 40% actually carry an organ donor card with them.

What are 5-Minute Commitments? With our 5-Minute Commitments, we want to inspire you to easily integrate commitment into your everyday life. They are independent of non-profit organizations and allow you to individually get involved with people and nature in your neighborhood.

Your Tasks

An organ donor card saves lives. To help you save lives too, you can fill out your card online and print it yourself, you can get it at many doctors' offices or pharmacies, or you can simply print it online for yourself and others order it for free. 

In your organ donor card, enter your personal information and indicate whether you are willing to donate organs and tissues, and if so, which ones. In addition, you can name a person who may decide this for you if such a situation should arise. 

Make sure to carry the organ donor card with you, as it is not officially registered. Carry it best in your wallet with your other personal papers, as that is where they will look first in case of accidents. Alternatively, this can also be kept by relatives or trusted persons. 

A tattoo, consisting of a circle and two semicircles, can be understood in addition to the legally valid organ donor card as a declaration of intent. Through the non-profit association Junge Helden and their campaign "OPT.INK", over 340 tattoo studios in Germany have agreed to tattoo this basic symbol, which can be modified and decorated, free of charge. Unlike the ID card, you always have this with you and can help relatives make a decision in case of doubt. 

You can also inform other people about organ donation and convince them to also carry an organ donor card with them.

No special requirements are necessary for this commitment.

Time required

You can complete this commitment in a short amount of time, but it can be longer depending on how involved you are in addition to the organ donor card.
