About the volunteering opportunity

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in offering their support to make it easier for refugees to settle in Berlin. The volunteer work is based on the sponsorship principle. The assignment of your help to a refugee (or family) takes place in close coordination with you. The tasks include support, contactability and, if necessary, referral to appropriate offices on all possible topics of everyday life.

Your Tasks

  • Translating (e.g. official letters)
  • Accompaniment to e.g. doctor's appointments, job center, school registration etc.
  • Filling out applications of any kind
The aim should always be not to simply relieve the refugees of their tasks, but to gradually enable them to solve all problems independently.

What's needed

For this volunteering opportunity, intermediate German skills are required.
  • Patience
  • Competence to understand official letters and derive actions from them
  • Empathy
  • being organized
  • Enjoy volunteer work with refugees

Time required

Regularly
Approx. 2 hours per week.
The time frame can be arranged individually. It is recommended to meet with the tandem partner once every 2 weeks to clarify current support needs. This can be done in consultation with the tandem in person or online.

Important notice

Refugees are often exposed to impressions and experiences that push them to the margins of society. Therefore, it may take some time for you to find a trusting basis with each other, but of course this does not have to be the case. We therefore ask you to consider that the formation of a tandem should be long-term (at least 6 months). It would be a shame if you moved house after 3 months, for example, and had to give up contact with the tandem.

Where?

Ehrenamtsbüro Bezirk Berlin-Mitte

The honorary office of the district Berlin-Mitte leads several so-called social commissions ("SoKo's") in the office for social affairs. In these SoKos, various voluntary activities can be supported (work with refugees, congratulatory service for senior citizens, commitment for meeting places).
