Volunteering in autumn despite Corona | How you can get involved from home

This autumn it is not only the cold and wet weather that makes us prefer to stay at home. It is also the latest reports of rising corona infection rates that suggest we should reduce activities outside the home to a minimum.

Of course, this also limits the opportunities to get socially involved. Volunteer work very often lives from personal interaction with other people, which is only possible to a limited extent or in many cases not an option at all – due to contact restrictions and hygiene regulations.

To enable you to continue getting socially involved without having to leave your house in this challenging situation, we introduce you to 7 volunteering opportunities that allow you to become active from the comfort of your own home.

1 I CREATE POEMS, HANDICRAFTS AND PICTURES FOR RETIREMENT HOMES

REMOTE VOLUNTEERING

Help the organization Care & Travel to make elderly people happy and feel a little less lonely by creating poems, handicrafts or pictures. Every little work of art can make an elderly person happy. So let your imagination run wild and simply send your works via mail!

2 I HELP WITH THE CREATION OF DIY-TOUCHBOOKS FOR BLIND CHILDREN

REMOTE VOLUNTEERING

There are still very few children’s books for blind and visually impaired children, which is why the Deutsche Blinden und Sehbehindertenverband (DBSV) has started its own children’s book production. You enjoy tinkering and would like to help with the production of their new children’s touch book “Teresa und der Blutmohn”? Then register now. The materials are provided by the DBSV and you can help from the comfort of your own home.

3 I SUPPORT THE ZERO WASTE ONLINE EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING

You enjoy writing, creating social media posts and you are familiar with Facebook, Instagram and Twitter? Then support Zero Waste in writing and curating the monthly newsletter as well as blog entries, Facebook/Instagram posts and Tweets and help spread their purpose: Driving the Zero Waste change together.

4 I HELP SENIORS WHO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH INTERNET, PC OR SMARTPHONE

ONLINE / REMOTE VOLUNTEERING

For some people, modern technology is a real challenge. They are happy if someone helps them use their smartphone or shows them how to surf the Internet safely. That’s why the Nachbarschaftsheim Schöneberg is looking for volunteers who will take 1-3 hours of their time once a month to explain to (mostly) senior citizens how a smartphone/computer works.

5 I SUPPORT THE MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE IN THE CONCEPTION OF WORKSHOPS AT SCHOOLS

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING

In a team with other interested people you will be trained by experts of the Mental Health Initiative in the field of mental health / dealing with mental illness and help designing workshops. After successful qualification, you will hold workshop sessions at schools together to promote awareness and understanding of this topic.

6 I BECOME A SPEAK BUDDY AND TEACH IN ONLINE LANGUAGES GROUPS

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING

As a SPEAK Buddy you have the opportunity to teach a language to other people – this includes people with a migration or refugee background as well as locals. Within the program you will lead an online language group 3 times a week (for 1 month) and have the opportunity to learn another language in the same format yourself.

7 I SUPPORT ONLINE CONSULTING FOR WHATSAPP-STRESS, CYBERMOBBING AND CO.

ONLINE VOLUNTEERING

JUUUPORT is looking for young people from 14 to 19 years. As a JUUUPORT-Scout you help other young people to cope with problems in the digital space. After a scout training you can become active in online counseling and independently answer questions – of course always with the support of experts in the fields of media education, law and psychology.
